stargazing
since the beginning of our time, we humans have been
turning to the sky in awe and wonder. For some of us the
stars was seen as gods, while others believe they are our
ancestors watching over us. in some cultures the sky
has been a canvas for storytelling from the gods, while
some have seen their own future in them. the different
ways to view the starry sky is almost as numerous as the
societies that have looked towards it, but the awe and
wonder has always persisted. with the first civilizations
in egypt, india, mesopotamia, china and central america
the first observatory structures were built, and the
knowledge of the universe increased alongside.
in our times, we have the knowledge. we know the nature
of the stars, the planets and all the other objects and
events that are visible to the naked eye. we also know the
earth is neither the center of the universe, nor the solar
system. we know that the starry sky is rotating because
the earth is spinning, and we know that the light from the
stars have travelled for years, even for centuries in some
cases. still, gazing upon the stars still fills most of us
with wonder. For some they represent an eternal longing
for going out to discover other worlds, while others
just remains facinated with the size and perspective of
everything.
rindal, kul-tur-sti and stargazing
in our modern world, there’s so much happening on the
ground that we seldom get the time to actually look up.
we have televisions and computers that are most used in
the evenings, and we prefer to stay inside where it’s light.
if we by chance are walking outside after sunset, the
street lights and the rest of the urban lights consumes
our attention and blinds us from seeing what’s above us.
in rindal they want the people to notice the night sky
again, and regain the the facination and feeling of
calmness this can provide. by building a star gazing
structure for everyone this close to the city center, people
will be able to take a break from the everyday life with a
small five minutes walk from their house. the site will
hopefully also be an exciting inspiration for the children
of the area, and let them discover and explore the
wonders of the night sky.
