ASSIGNMENT AND SITE

As described earlier the task from Rindal municipality was to

design and build a stargazing tower along the “Kul-Tur-Sti”.

The municipality has given the students a site to work with

which is situated close to the culture path, in a corner of a

green field outside the city. Children walking to school will pass

this site on a daily bases which will encourage activity around

the area.

The site is characterized by the contrast between the open field

and the dense woods behind. It is situated close to a steep hill,

almost like an edge, giving it a lovely view to the northwest. It is

possible to access the site in two different ways, either via the

field or, more adventurously, via the steep hill. This placement

creates also two different views of the building: from the open

field we can see clearly the whole construction, or from the

down part of the hill, when you can only see a glimpse of the

very upper part.

In respect to stargazing, the site has some drawbacks since

there are many trees around and also some sources of light

pollution. There also lacks a 360-degree view. Considering that

the stargazing structure will primarily be used for stargazing

in wintertime (since the sky is too bright during the summer

months), the stargazing structure should provide an interesting

place to spend time at during all year and not only strictly for

stargazing. The structure should therefore work as a meeting

place where people can socialize, barbeque and children can

play all year long.
