hoW to Burn shIngles
the traditional technique of shou suge Ban consists of burning
long wood boards on a fire, but we were also offered to buy
burned wood boards that were burned industrialized with using
gas. We decided to try out the old fashioned way in a workshop,
but eventually chose to buy the industrialized boards due to
limited time. heavily charred on the outside and lightly burned
on the inside.
BurnIng tradItIonally
1. you take three long wooden boards and put together in a
triangle, making it into a wood chimney. make it steady and
ensure the edges meet perfectly. If the edges don’t meet
perfectly you will get unburned white stripes.
2. you hold the chimney over open fire for approximately two
minutes befor turning it upside down and do the same for the
other side. Before you turn it you can expect heavy smoke
coming from the top during the last minute. after turning the
chimney you can expect fire coming out of the chimney top, in
addition to heavy smoke.
3. Put the chimney down on a flat, heat resistant surface.
splash water in there to kill the worst flames before you cut it
open and shower the boards completely, until they have stopped
burning.
BurnIng WIth gas
Burning shingles with gas is quite simple. you just turn on the
gas, press the trigger and stop when you think the wood is
charred/dark enough. this way it is easy to control how much
charring you want, in comparison to burning on a fire. on the
other hand, the charring pattern doesn’t seem to go as deep.
PreProductIon
during preproduction we had plenty to do with cutting the
chingles into the right length, stacking them up, so we could
burn all the endwood in stacks of 300 shingles. then oiling the
ends.
after the burning was complete we put the shingles on 2,5
meter battons that would be transported to the site in rindal.
