Background

Over the last few years, reasonably priced

methods for measuring rock-blasted tunnel

geometries with laser scanners have become

available. This information can be used to find

tunnel friction factors. The Research Council of

Norway has made a contribution to a project in

which selected tunnels are tested in a hydraulic

laboratory. Here, friction loss, water velocity and

turbulence are measured.

At the same time, it is desirable to find these

quantities using a three-dimensional numerical

model solving Navier-Stokes’ equations. The

latter is the topic for thismaster thesis. The CFD

program OpenFOAM will be used.
