Application

Possibilities:
  • Temperature limit: 1550°C
  • Max heating rate: 5ºC/min up to 300ºC, typically 4 h to 1500ºC
  • Max cooling rate: 5ºC/min, typically 5 h from 1500ºC
  • Size: 5 cm inner tube diameter
  • Atmosphere:
    • Oxidizing
    • Non-toxic gas
    • Carbon-free environment
  • Gas purging
  • Sampling
  • Cooling of off-gas
Can not be used for
  • Samples which
    • Evaporate and condenses onto alumina tube
  • Rapid heating/cooling
  • Vacuum
  • Precisely controlled atmosphere (leakage)
  • Highly toxic gases (leakage)
Previously used for
  • Hydrogen, CO and steam purging on silicon melt, with sampling of melt.

Before you begin

  • Contact equipment responsible:

  • Equipment may not be used without training
  • Contact room responsible for access.

Known problems and fixes:
  • Alumina tube easily breaks by mechanical and thermal shock
  • At present not vacuum tight (leakage)
  • Heating and cooling take hours
  • Crucible height can not be easily adjusted
    • Requires cutting and stacking of alumina spacers.
  • Cooling water safety switch is sensitive
    • Typically causes "0r" error on temperature controller and power shut-down
    • Power can be turned back on after checking cooling water and ensuring contact in cooling water safety switch (push down lever).
