construction

Slates and wooden shingles protect the construction

from the water and the wind. Wood is used on the

western facade, and stone on the roof.

The shingles are made of the heartwood of pine

from Elsrud gård in Viker, and nailed to the wooden

structure.

The slates were once covering an old house in

Begnadalen, and laid with the help of the Valdres

Folkemuseum. About one thousand slates were

placed on top of each other and nailed to the battens

below. The numerous holes and asperities in each

piece gives us a glimpse of their history.

The cantilevered exposed slab is covered by a single

stone, sourced less than five kilometres from the site

and split using a hammer and a chisel.
