INTRODUCTION
Watching birds is about having a quiet and a good view. Viewing
things from a distance, while being calm in nature. This bird
watching tower focuses on the view, and both form, placement
and detailing are important elements in creating it. In adition
to this, the natural qualities of the site is also implemented to
enhance the site´s characteristics.
The project is named “in between trees”. This derives from the
focus on the closed space within the small pine forest, meaning
the qualities this space holds, in terms of transparency and
protection, and how this can be used.
SITE
The site is by the small lake Igltjønna, close to the centre of
Rindal. The Rindal Culture Path moves around the lake and give
easy access to the site. The tower is placed in front of a hill with
a small and dense pine forest. The hill provides cover and silence
for the birdwatchers. Arriving through the pine forest also
reduces the chance of scaring away the birds by the lake, and
the silhouette of the tower itself is reduced to a minimum.
The dense forest, with high and thin pine trees, creates a quite
special atmosphere and a sense of protection. The Bird Watching
tower will add to this experience. The tower concentrates around
two situations: the space within the pine forest, and the raised
platform where the bird watching mainly takes place. The tower
connects these two in a simple structure.
THE STRUCTURE
I started out the project with investigating how a form could
connect the two situations I focus on. With a grasshopper
definition I was able to generate many different designs to
analyse simplicity, the placement on the site, how the forest
space and the viewing space was connected, and how readable
the form was.
