THE CONSTRUCTION
The tower consists of six triangular based modules which all
rest on foundations in the ground. They have two different
orientations to give the viewer a more spesific direction
of watching birds as well as blending better inn with the
topography.
All the triangular shapes in the modules makes the “grid” of the
tower and gives it a simplistic system of building. The stairs for
example are using the module triangle to define its slope. The
walls and railings also respond to the modules.
The beams/pillars with the longest span (between two joints)
is about 3m, and is dimensioned to tackle the forces which are
working on them. Most of the joints are held together with the
help of steel plates and bolts.
SPATIAL QUALITIES
The bird watching tower consists of two levels - one at “ground”
level and one about 4m higher than the lowest fundamentation
point. In addition the structure is divided into two covered,
“inside” spaces with a open area in between which also inhabits
a tree that grows freely through the flooring. Imaginge sitting in
the sunshine watching the pond while leaning your back towards
this tree.
The covered spaces are cladded with 4x4cm timber beams that
give a more open feeling the if fully cladded. There are also
bigger gaps to give the opening needed to watch birds through
binoculars. Two gaps are low, while two are high - respectively
meant for children and adults. The transparent wall makes
it easier for the people to see out than for the birds to see
movement inside.
