CoPCSE@NTNU

A CoP (Community of Practice) is a group of people sharing a common challenge or interest who meet regularly to address the needs of the group and the individuals. A CoP brings people together, facilitates a joint understanding of the current situation, enables dialogues, stimulates learning, creates platforms for collaboration, provides an informal organisational structure, and generates new knowledge - for the individual as well as for the community.

The Potential

Computer science is one of the few scientific areas in the new NTNU. NTNU Gløshaugen, Gjøvik, Kalvskinnet, and Ålesund all offer bachelor programmes in Computer Science). The merger puts the computer science professors at the new NTNU in a unique position because of:

  • the importance role computer science has as an enabling technology for students, researchers, and administrative staff at NTNU in general,
  • the expectations society has for computer science as a force for innovation, and
  • the potential a CoP in computer science education has for demonstrating the potential and the importance of the computer science area.

Objectives

The CoP starts out with the objectives of:

  • developing NTNU's educational offering in computer science in a way that improves our ability to solve our mission,
  • developing a common knowledge base for NTNU students in the field,
  • identifying and using digital collaborative platforms for knowledge sharing,
  • developing joint learning objects for computer science students at NTNU, and
  • improving the interface between high schools and NTNU in the field of computer science.

The CoP should be an integral part of a future center of excellence in the field.
