DNV GL is an international accredited registrar and classification society headquartered in Høvik, Norway. The company currently has about 14,500 employees and 350 offices operating in more than 100 countries, and provides services for several industries including maritime, renewable energy, oil & gas, electrification, food & beverage and healthcare. It was created in 2013 as a result of a merger between two leading organizations in the field - Det Norske Veritas (Norway) and Germanischer Lloyd (Germany).


For users of Linux and macOS: The DNV GL Software is unfortunately only available for Windows operating systems. The easiest way to fix this is to install Windows as a dual boot configuration (see our guide) or to install Windows as a virtual PC inside your existing operating system. This can be done in various ways, but we have made a guide on Installing a virtual machine using VirtualBox.

If you do not have a valid Windows license, this can be acquired for free by following the instructions from NTNU Innsida. After the dual boot or the virtual machine is configured, you can follow this guide as normal.

How to download and install DNV GL Software

If you are downloading several programs from DNV GL, it is highly beneficial to download the Application Version Manager which keeps track of all installed programs such that they can be located by other DNV GL applications.

  • License: To licence any DNV GL software, visit NTNU Software's page on DNV GL and follow the instructions.
  • Install Sesam software: The DNV GL Sesam programs may be downloaded from this page (64-bit, but notice link to 32-bit at page, as some software are not in 64-bit). To licence the software, follow the instructions above.
  • Install other software:
    • The DNV GL programs can be downloaded from their webpage: Customer login. You will need to register first, but all NTNU e-mail addresses will be accepted for making an account, though there could be some waiting time before the account is activated. To licence the software, follow the instructions above.
    • Some software may also be downloaded from NTNU Software's page on DNV GL, but keep in mind that these versions may not always be updated.
