"This course first introduces the definition of the creativity. Then it presents a few psychological techniques of creating new ideas. It also covers the TRIZ technique which is a step-by-step idea creation technique. Then it covers the computer hardware and software design processes which are a lot different from the industrial processes. Finally it covers the project management, the documentation, and the presentation methods. Students have opportunities of practicing the learned techniques by doing the class discussion and the term project on the robot platform. Students must complete their term projects by: 1) planning and executing their MBO’s (management by object), 2) writing functional specifications of their designs, 3) implementing the designs, 4)testing and demonstrating the implementations, and finally 5) giving the presentations of the projects."3

This course will be an introduction to data mining or machine learning. Machine Learning is a technology which allows us to discover knowledge from massive data. This is an essential paradigm for making intelligent/smart decisions and prediction with abundance of information. The course will be taught through lectures, with class participation expected and encouraged. The workload will include both written assignments and software projects using Weka data mining software. A number of lab homework or modest size project may be assigned to each student.

Database Systems

This course covers introduction to database systems and applications using databases. It introduces the

E-R model and its mapping to the relational data model. Studies the logical language in the relational data

model and its relationship to the commercial relational query language: SQL. Examines in depth how to

design a database conforming to different normal forms.

Each student (two students make a team) will be given 3-4 homeworks during the semester. These

homeworks include laboratory-oriented tasks such as designing E-R, creating databases, executing SQL,

etc. Additional homeworks mainly from textbook are possibility.
