Background: A large number of the world’s large dams and reservoirs are built for other types of use than hydropower production, in particular in Asia and Africa, but also in Europe a large number of dams have been built without hydroelectricity as one of the functions.

Figure 1: The figure shows the large single purpose dams, as given in ICOLD database. Also smaller dams and multi-purpose dams without hydropower will be investigated in the project.

This project aims at analyzing the possibility of retrofitting some of the dams/reservoirs for hydropower production in Romania:

•    the hydropower potential from non-hydropowered dams in Romania
•    which technology that can be feasible to use on these non-hydropower dams/reservoirs
•    the possible impacts (if any) could on the existing use of the dams/reservoirs
•    identify potential barrier for deployment of the idea (of retrofitting)
•    estimate the national potential for hydropower production non-hydropower dams/reservoirs

The starting point will be an assessment of the potential in one or two basins, with the aim to upscale this to the national potential. The analysis will be based on the application of WEAP.

The project will be carried in close cooperation with scientists from the University og Iasi and the University of Bucharest.
