Nordic MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MARITIME ENGINEERING
About the study programme
The programme is designed for students
who wish to pursue a career in the
technical maritime world, where they
will cooperate as professionals on
designing, building or operating ships,
offshore structures, boats or other
floating structures.
The programme has two parts:
It is required that you start part 1 at one
of the partner universities and finish part
2 at another university.
1. In the first year, you learn topics
of maritime engineering, naval
architecture and offshore engi-
neering on Master level: stability,
resistance and propulsion, sea
keeping, maneuvering and ship and
ocean structures. If you did not have
naval architecture as a part of your
bachelors’ programme, you will also
have basic introductory courses in
naval architecture. In addition to
maritime engineering courses, you
must do courses on general and
special engineering competences,
such as CFD, structural analysis,
The Nordic Master's in Maritime Engineering combines the top
expertise of five Nordic Universities with long standing tradi-
tions and competence in the field of naval architecture, offshore
engineering and maritime engineering. The programme gives
you the opportunity to choose between five study environments
that all are highly specialized and technologically advanced. It
thus offers you a unique possibility to benefit from the lead
expertise of each of the five universities and specialize to the
top level in a stimulating Nordic environment together with
other international students.

composite materials etc. The
emphasis depends on the entrance
University and qualifications of
yours. In particular Aalto but also
NTNU offer elective courses in Arctic
maritime engineering as part of the
curricula.
2. In the second year, you specialize
in one of the five subjects: ocean
structures, passenger ships, ship
design, ship operations and small
craft.
The programme offers the
following five specializations:
ww Ocean Structures (NTNU, Norway)
ww Passenger Ships (Aalto, Finland)
ww Ship Design (Chalmers, Sweden)
ww Ship Operation (DTU, Denmark)
ww Small Craft (KTH, Sweden)
Career opportunities
By completing the master’s programme
in Maritime Engineering you will have
qualifications and competence on a high
level within naval architecture or
offshore engineering. The future
challenges for safer, more energy
efficient and more environmentally
friendly activities in the maritime field
will enhance the needs for maritime
engineers. As a highly qualified graduate
you will bring the newest and most
rational engineering methods and
disciplines into the daily work of your
company.
Admission requirements
This programme requires a bachelor's in
Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architec-
ture or Naval Architecture and Marine
Engineering. There are a number of ad-
ditional requirements, also with respect
