Nordic MASTER OF SCIENCE IN APPLIED AND ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS
ABOUT THE STUDY PROGRAMME
The master’s programme in Applied and
Engineering Mathematics (N5TeAM) is a
two year long study, where the students
get to study one year at two of the five
participant universities: Aalto Univer-
sity School of Science in Finland, The
Technical University of Denmark, The KTH
Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden,
The Norwegian University of Science and
Technology, and Chalmers University of
Technology in Sweden.
During the two years, a broad range of
engineering mathematics and theoretical
mathematical topics will be covered. The
students will gain solid knowledge in
mathematical sciences, and be able to
solve relevant problems in a wide range of
applications. The subject areas include:
ww numerical analysis
ww biocomputing
ww applied mathematical analysis
ww cryptology and coding theory
ww partial differential equations
ww stochastics, computational and
spatial statistics
ww computational mechanics, geoscien-
ces, and geometric integration
STUDY ENVIRONMENT
The curriculum and student mobility
plan has been developed based on the
strengths and research specialisation of
each of the five partner universities. The
teaching is based on lectures, exerci-
ses and projects work on theory and
computing. The students become a part of
the mathematical sciences departments
at the two universities where they are
enrolled, and will also be a part of the
N5TeAM of students.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Students graduating from this pro-
gramme will be qualified for demanding
positions in industry, particularly in fields
that require the use of mathematical mo-
dels, optimization, and simulation. They
have a particularly interesting profile for
the Nordic and European work markets.
Furthermore, all participant universities
have well working PhD programs and they
are partners of several graduate schools.
All students who have successfully
completed MSc in this programme are
eligible to enter postgraduate studies in
any of the participating universities.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor’s degree of 180 ECTS in
science (BSc) or engineering (BEng)
or documented equivalent studies in
mathematics and applied sciences such
as physics. The applicant should have
solid knowledge of the following subjects:
vector calculus, linear algebra, ordinary
differential equations, numerical analysis,
probability and statistics. In addition, a
basic understanding of partial differential
equations and knowledge and experience
of a higher programming language are
required.
The master’s programme in
Applied and Engineering
Mathematics deals with
mathematical sciences
relevant for engineering. The
main ingredients of the
programme come from
derivation, validation, and use
of mathematical models in
science and engineering.
During the programme, the
students will study at two of
the five partner universities.
