DETAILING
It was early decided that the birdwatching place should have a
fireplace where it should be possible to gather larger groups,
like school children. Due to the topography of the area it was
suggested that the fireplace platform should be located on
the north-east side of the building. Since the ground floor of
the main structure is raised from the ground, the idea was to
continue the floor out in the same height until it reaches the
ground. Since it wasn’t possible to know the exact height, area
and shape of the floor, the platform was not designed until the
construction had started on site. However, it was assumed that
the area of the platform would be around 25m
2
. In advance it
was also worked out a detail for how the fireplace should be
constructed, but it’s precise placement on the platform was not
decided until the construction on site began.
During the detailing of the fireplace it was decided that it should
be possible to sit around it, and it should therefore be an open-
ing in the platform where the edges of the platform would func-
tion as sitting places. The fireplace would also be a bit lower
than the platform, so it is possible to rest your feet onto the fire-
place. In the original detail the idea was that the floor boards on
the platform would continue down and also work as floor around
the fireplace. This was in order to make the fireplace seem more
integrated into the structure. In advance it was proposed that
the beams from the main structure should be fastened to col-
umns standing on impregnated wood pieces. On site it turned
out that it was possible to get columns dug into the ground as
foundations around the fireplace, making the platform more
stable. It was also decided that the ground around the fireplace
should be covered with the same stones as the fireplace itself.
This was due to two things; the people from Rindal expressed
concern regarding fire safety and that it seemed difficult to con-
tinue the floor boards on the ground with the same precision as
the rest of the floor boards, due to the topography.
