An offshore wind turbine produces electricity, and this is transferred to land in buried power cables. In areas with sea ice and ice ridges there is a danger for ice ridges to plough the seabed and damage the power cable. The cable needs to be buried so deep that the risk for damage is low enough. In this task, the student should carry out numerical simulations of an ice ridge ploughing the seabed. Both ridge keel and the soil are deformable bodies, so deformations and stresses in both the ice and the soil should be simulated.

Example of FEM simulations of ice ridge-soil interaction.
