Within industrial automation, fieldbus protocols such as DeviceNet and CANopen hold significant positions, but they compete with several other protocols depending on region, industry, and application.

DeviceNet, originally developed by Allen-Bradley, holds a market share of about 3%. This protocol has had a significant presence especially in areas where Rockwell Automation systems are popular. Although it's still widely used in certain industrial segments, the adoption of newer, more advanced network technologies, like Ethernet/IP, has diminished its relative market share over time.

CANopen, with a market share of approximately 2%, has proven to be more versatile, with applications extending beyond pure industrial automation, including medical, maritime, and mobile machinery markets. Although it has a broader application, its market share in some regions might be overshadowed by protocols like PROFINET, EtherCAT, or Modbus.
