Cygwin er en samling av fri programvare som består et bibliotek som implementerer POSIX for Microsoft Windows, samt flere verktøy og programmer. Dette gir et Unix-lignende miljø med blant annet kompilatoren GCC og unix-skallet Bash i Windows. Cygwin gjør det lettere å porte programmer fra Linux og andre Unix-lignende systemer til Windows. Cygwin-biblioteket er utviklet av Red Hat is a POSIX-compatible environment that runs natively on Microsoft Windows. Its goal is to allow programs of Unix-likesystems to be recompiled and run natively on Windows with minimal source code modifications by providing them with the same underlying POSIX API they would expect in those systems.
