Topic: HSI HW; Onboard processing; Mission; Downlink of Data; NEX (NASA Earth Exchange)

  • Presented the HSI mission (MDR+HSI ver. 6 prototype)
    • Emphasizing that our SmallSat is complementary to other (small and large sat) remote sensing missions
    • Interested also on the weather-impacts
      • Should have in-situ assets to verify AND
      • Correlate with Sea-Surface-Temperature (SST) and weather conditions (wind speeds, atmospheric conditions, waves etc.)
  • Discussions
    • V4 HSI
      • He was interested in testing/having a copy of this, wants to use on the desk
      • Very fond of the idea of using low-cost COTS components to manufacture the camera
    • V6 HSI (prototype)
      • Sounds reasonable to go with this design in terms of better SNR
      • Easier to process in terms of "what we are looking for"
    • Onboard-processing
      • Downlinking 2-3x more data (larger image size), should not be a problem in terms of downlink budget
      • Careful with the deconvolution processing + radiometric processing on-board the SmallSat, as geometric and atmospheric variables need to be cross-checked carefully (by a person). Having databases on-board is good, but not great for having all the real environmental data correlated with the images taken.
      • Spectral+spatial processing makes sense
      • He is interested in having our datasets added to the supercomputing simulations at NASA Ames (NEX)
      • He loved the idea of very short response time between SmallSat-mission control-potential other agents (UAV, USV, AUV). I said 30 min max until end-user get's the complete data.
    • NEX
      • We should have a look at the projects and resources available there: https://nex.nasa.gov/nex
      • They focus now on using multi-spectral data from GOES-R and GOES-S satellite series: https://www.goes-r.gov/
        • Weather monitoring and forecasting
        • GEO satellites (3 hrs response time)
        • Uses, amongst others, the ABI instrument: https://www.goes-r.gov/spacesegment/abi.html
          • Multi-spectral Imager
          • 16 channels
          • 500 m spatial resolution (visible spectrum)
        • Takes full disk images every 15 min
        • Takes images of US coast every 5 min
        • On-board calibration available
      • Also use images from MODIS for ocean color
      • Combine all open data for exquisite virtual and scientific simulations with data that correlates (please see resources: https://nex.nasa.gov/nex/resources/)

Action items:

  1. Bring a HSI (v.4) copy to have him have a look
  2. Look into the NEX projects and resources, use their data and algorithms
  3. Further discussions with him TBD
