null Masteroppgave - Combining make and buy and offshore projects: A case study of a Norwegian project-based organization.
– Av Friso Mous

The sourcing of quality products is considered one of the key success factors within projects. The decision of sourcing is usually handled through a make or buy approach. Literature surrounding this sourcing decision shows that both sourcing modes offer their own benefits to a company. This therefore leads to a question: why should a company need to decide between make or buy? And is there a sourcing mode that includes the benefits of both approaches? An approach that combines both sourcing modes is currently getting more attention from scholars and shows promising benefits to a company that uses it. This sourcing approach is called the make and buy theory.

The current body of knowledge shows that, when a company decides to both make and buy the same product, several benefits can occur. These benefits are based on the knowledge gain that is achieved within a company by producing a product. This knowledge can then be used as a tool to sanction or bargain with suppliers, and to monitor the quality of product deliveries from suppliers. Furthermore, by buying a product, a company can learn from suppliers in order to create a more efficient internal production process.

In the case study, the findings show that both the use of make and buy as a sanctioning tool towards suppliers and make and buy as a monitoring tool can be beneficial to the case company, Aker Solutions. Furthermore, the findings of the case study have shown that Aker Solutions is currently already involved in a similar practice within the company.

The results of this study present that the benefits, presented by the make and buy theory, can be beneficial to Aker Solutions. Furthermore, the results show that Aker Solutions is already engaged in similar practices. Finally, the thesis concludes on a recommendation to further investigate the implementation of make and buy in the company.
