A solution of Na-alginate (typically 2-5%) is mixed withe a cell suspension,
and drops transferred to a solution containing Ca
++
ions. A gel is formed
instantaneously on the surface of the drop. As Ca
++
ions diffuse into the drop
it solidifies throughout the entire volume. Such gel beads can be used to
immobilize insulin-producing cells and are currently (2013) tested for their
ability to treat diabetes in animal models.
