• ANNUAL REPORT 2013
In the beginning of 2013, SAMCoT had 22 PhD candi-
dates and 2 Postdocs. Four of these candidates already
started their professional careers since obtaining
their PhDs and are currently employed by some of our
partners and other key industry players. In addition, the
harvesting of SAMCoT´s initial investment has started
and is now visible in the substantial scientific produc-
tion achieved in 2013 and the continuous creation of new
spin-off activities.
Throughout 2013 most SAMCoT researchers took part
in field expeditions at sea and in coastal areas, from
Baydarskaya Bay and Varandey in Russia to the east and
the Greenland Sea in the west. These activities would
have not been possible without an extensive logistics
and HSE planning. Every mid-January SAMCoT offers an
HSE Safety Course at UNIS to the researchers who will
take part in field activities and that have not followed this
compulsory course previously. HSE is given the highest
priority in our Centre for Research-based Innovation
and the logistics department at UNIS is a key player in
SAMCoT´s HSE strategy.
These research expeditions have provided valuable
input generating laboratory activities that lead to new or
improved theoretical and numerical models.
Summary of the scientific
accomplishments in the different Work
Packages in 2013
Data Collection and Process Modelling
(Work Package 1 – WP1)
Collection of data of sea ice properties and ice loads
on coastal structures in the fjords of Spitsbergen and
the central western Barents Sea is a key contribution
of WP1. Strength tests have included uniaxial compres-
sion of ice core samples, flexural strength of cantilever
beams, tests with fixed-end beams and indentation
tests. Mathematical 3D modelling of beam tests was
performed in order to improve the data interpretation.
The studies in the Barents Sea have included the drift
of sea ice, metocean data and turbulence in ice adjacent
water layers, and ice ridge morphological and strength
properties. This work has led to the development of
a model of ice ridge keel consolidation in water with
varying freezing points. The study includes analytical
solutions, experiments and numerical solutions which
contribute to long-term statistics that are important for

– The Year 2013 in Review
Dear Researchers, Professors and Partners:
In 2013 SAMCoT has proactively met the challenges that our industrial partners will face
in the Arctic Region. We have developed the highest standards for Health, Safety and
Environment (HSE) as well as Operational Quality in the Arctic.
SAMCoT´s increased knowledge of the Arctic and our research achievements will promote
the development of innovative technical solutions that industry needs.
It is here at SAMCoT where the next generation of industry thinkers is being trained,
supervised by world-leading researchers in the field of Arctic technology.
