MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL TOxICOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY
AbOUT THE PROGRAMME
A diverse team of scientists is ready
to offer you a two-year international,
interdisciplinary master's programme in
close collaboration with industrial partners
(SINTEF and Statoil). You will work in a
group incorporating both Norwegian and
international students. All teaching is in
English. The programme also offers you the
opportunity to experience one semester in
Svalbard (UNIS), an archipelago situated
in the heart of the Arctic. This programme
provides the vital link between environmen-
tal toxicology and environmental chemistry.
The main focus will be the fate and effects
of pollutants, and how they are distributed
in the environment (air, water, and food
chains) both on a local and a global scale.
You will study the interaction between
environmental toxicants and organisms,
and how this impacts on populations and
ecosystems. Methods will include field
work and/or experimental exposure studies
in laboratory on individual organisms (in
vivo) or on cell cultures (in vitro). It is also
possible to specialise within the area of
environmental monitoring of organic and
inorganic chemical toxicants. This will
include method development, and quality
assurance using state of the art equipment.
You will also study a wide range of environ-
mental pollutants and methods of pollution
control which are of utmost importance for
the management of natural resources and
ecosystems. These skills and experiences
are extremely marketable, making you
attractive to a wide range of employers both
in the public and private sectors.
STUDy ENvIRONMENT AND
ADvANTAGES
The Departments of Chemistry and Biology
are situated at the Gløshaugen campus
where you will have access to excellent
facilities and state of the art scientific
equipment. We have strong teaching and
research links with other technology
departments in the university. The campus
has an excellent location, being close to
our programme collaborators SINTEF and
Statoil and Trondheim city centre. Master's
students at NTNU have their own student
organization, arranging social events
through the year and providing help and
support. We would like to welcome you to a
multicultural and attractive study environ-
ment focused on providing a high quality
teaching and learning community.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
w To qualify for the specialisation in En-
vironmental Toxicology: BSc in Biology
(minimum of 80 ECTS credits biology
courses) including pollution biology. In
addition, applicants must have a basic
knowledge of chemistry.
w To qualify for the specialisation in
Environmental Chemistry: BSc in
Chemistry including environmental
and/or analytical chemistry.
w Bachelor's degrees within other related
areas may be considered on an indivi-
dual basis. The candidate’s background
should provide a biological and/or
chemical relevant basis for the master
study in Environmental Toxicology and
Chemistry.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Graduates of the master's programme
will be internationally qualified for a wide
range of positions in public and government
institutions, administrative environmental
agencies, consultancy companies and
industry (e.g. oil and energy companies and
the chemical industry) both as researcher
or adviser. Some examples are Det Norske
Veritas, SINTEF, and National State Pol-
lution Authorities. Furthermore, there is
an increasing need for competence within
the area of risk assessment (REACH).
COMPETITIvE ADvANTAGES
Through this programme you will be part
of a large international scientific and
industrial network. The candidates in
environmental toxicology can after five
years of work experience apply to become
a “European Registered Toxicologist”.
TOPICS OF THE MASTER’S THESIS
HAvE AMONG OTHERS INCLUDED
w Environmental monitoring of
marine and coastal areas.
w Impacts of oil and gas activities on
the marine environment.
w Distribution of brominated flame
retardants in nature.
w Long-range atmospheric transport,
deposition and effects of trace
metals.
w Occurrence of environmental pol-
lutants in complex mixtures.
Anthropogenic pollution is
one of the most significant
threats to the environment.
Organic and inorganic envi-
ronmental toxicants origina-
ting from human activities are
distributed throughout the
world via oceanic currents
and atmospheric transport
processes. This issue is of
global importance. Consequ-
ently, there is a high demand
from both society and indus-
try for scientists with compe-
tence within the interdiscipli-
nary scientific area of
environmental toxicology and
chemistry.
