MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
ABOUT THE STUDY PROGRAMME
We offer a two-year international MSc
programme for both Norwegian and
international students, and all teaching
is in English. If you are interested in
biological reactions and systems, and
how the knowledge about these topics
can be used, this might be a good choice
for you. You can write your thesis within
a wide range of research fields, e.g.
molecular biology, systems biology,
biopolymer chemistry, food chemistry
and environmental biotechnology.
REQUIREMENTS
You are qualified for admission to this
programme if you have:
ww a bachelor's degree within cell- and
molecular biology,
ww a bachelor's degree from Norwegian
university colleges within bioengi-
neering or food technology
ww an education which corresponds to
3 years of study at university level
within the field of biotechnology or
biochemistry
STUDY ENVIRONMENT
You will have access to excellent facilities
and state of the art scientific equipment.
We have strong teaching and research
links with other technology departments
in the university. The campus has an ex-
cellent location, being close to Trondheim
city centre. Masters students at NTNU
have their own student organisation,
arranging social events through the year
and providing help and support. We would
like to welcome you to a multicultural
and attractive study environment focused
on providing a high quality teaching and
learning community.
CAREER PROSPECTS
A Master’s degree in Biotechnology will
give you a solid basis for further careers,
both nationally and internationally. Uni-
versity-trained personnel at the MSc level
are needed and employed by hospitals
and other health services, environmental
agencies, consultancy companies and
industry, both as researchers or advisors.
Graduates are qualified for practical
clinical work and technical executive
positions in hospital laboratories as
well as different positions in public and
government institutions. After graduating
you are also qualified for both internatio-
nal and Norwegian PhD-positions.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND

Are cells able to communicate
with each other? Can bacteria
contribute to reduce pol-
lution? Are there types of
antibiotics that we still don’t
know about? These are all
questions that biotechnology
might give you the answer to.
In a biotechnology master's
programme you can study
molecules, cells and orga-
nisms with the aim to under-
stand how biological proces-
ses work, and to develop
methods to produce biomole-
cules such as lipids, polysac-
charides, enzymes or meta-
bolites.
