ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND
APPLICATION DEADLINE: see page 1.
AbOUT THE STUDy PROGRAMME
The Mphil in Development Studies provi-
des the students with an understanding
of the relationship between growth and
poverty, globalisation and processes of
marginalisation. Who wins and who loses
in the developing process? What is the
significance of social changes occurring
in poor and developing countries today?
The aim is to provide students from the
South with expertise that can be used in
the development process in their home
countries, and to give students from the
North knowledge that will make them
capable of assisting the development
process, either through working in Nor-
way or abroad. All lectures and tutorials
are held in English.
STUDy ENvIRONMENT
Students from developing countries in
Asia and Africa, Norwegian students
and some students from other countries
attend the programme.
ADMI SSION REQUIREMENTS
The programme is open to both
international and Norwegian students.
Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s
degree in Social Sciences. A minimum
of one year of studies within geography,
planning and/or development studies
is required. Possible admission to the
programme requires a minimum of an
average grade of C. C is, however, not
a guarantee for admission. The lan-
guage of instruction is English and the
applicants must document their English
proficiency.
CAREER PROSPECTS
The MPhil in Development Studies gives
the students a unique opportunity to le-
arn about other cultures and the complex
issues of social change, making them
well-equipped to work in other countries
after their studies. The programme
provides the students with an opportunity
to work in jobs related to development
issues. The programme is relevant for
jobs within research, planning, resource
management and teaching. In Norway
this includes for instance NORAD, Non
Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and
various Ministries (Foreign Affairs etc).
ADvANTAGES
We aim at listening to voices from the
South. Teachers from different coun-
tries in Africa and Asia are accordingly
involved as lecturers etc. in a number of
courses. The Norwegian teachers have
long and varied work experience from
research and teaching in the South.
Trondheim has the most vital student
environment in Norway.
EXAMPLE S OF SPECIALIZATIONS
The programme is structured around
three core courses, different elective
courses (some of which are offered by
other departments) and the writing of a
Master’s thesis. The thesis is a substan-
tial individual research project. Some
examples of previously written theses:
w Urban Poverty and Poor Housing
Conditions - Sri Lanka
w From economic considerations to
social implications: a case study
of female workers in Norwegian
industry, Jiangsu province, China
w The struggle for gender equality in
the Islamic Republic of Iran
This programme focuses on
development issues, develo-
ping countries and North-
South relations. Would you like
to study together with students
from all over the world? Then
the MPhil in Development
Studies might be a perfect
programme for you.
