INTENTION
My starting point for the project was the site, which I found very
inspiring. The nature is diverse; with the lake, swamp and for-
est. This gives the place a special and unique atmosphere with
several impressions to take in. I wanted the birdwatching place
to become a place that invites and encourage people to come
outdoors and experience all these impressions. The main inten-
tion of the project was therefore to create an open and transpar-
ent structure where one has a good view to the birds, one can
feel the wind in the hair and listen to the insects in the grass.
FORM
I also wanted the structure to be inspired by nature in it’s form
and expression. It was important that it expressed movement
and dynamics in order to fit into the always changing landscape.
In order to create a structure with movement in it, I was able to
use digital tools for creating an organic form and then to ex-
tract static elements (frames) from it. Here I could play with the
number of frames and the distances between them. The organic
form was inspired by a bird taking off from the ground. During
this process I also chose to open the structure towards the lake
in order to enhance the openness and the view. This openness
are reflected in the size of the frames, but also in the distances
between them that increases towards the major viewpoint.
CONSTRUCTION
The construction is made of the wooden frames, that are carry-
ing the floorboards on beams. To create horizontal stability the
floor is ankered to the ground in the southern part of the struc-
ture which makes it stable in one direction. The other direction is
stabilized by steel bracings underneath the beams carrying the
floor.
SAILING CLOTH
Sailing cloth can be fastened between the frames during bird-
watching season (April-October) to provide some protection from
sun, rain and wind. The cloth is only attached to the roof and to
the south-west wall in order to keep it is as open as possible,
but still protects you from the worst wind from sun from the
southwest. The cloth should also be kept as tight as possible in
order to enhance the dynamic shape of the structure.
