tainable
Development
UNCSD
(Rio+20) - June 2012, Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil
John E Hermansen, Department of Industrial
Economics and Technology Management,
was accredited the UNCED as delegate for
International Society for Industrial Ecology
(ISIE). ISIE was part of the Science and Tech-
nology major group. Hermansen attended
inter alia the internet based Rio+20 Dia-
logues, and the final plenary meeting with
official presentation of reports from high-lev-
el round tables, outcome documents as The
Future We Want and statements by States.
Due to Hermansen’s interests in forest ecol-
ogy, conservation, REDD+, and management
he attended “The 8th Roundtable at Rio+20
on Forests” organized by Center for Inter-
national Forestry Research (CIFOR), and the
side event “Advancing Public-Private Partner-
ships for Deforestation-Free and Sustainable
Agriculture” organized by the “Avoided De
forestation Partners” and Jeff Horowitz and
Jane Goodall in collaboration with the global
industrial and retailer network “Consumer
Gods Forum.”
He also attended the side event International
Society for Ecological Economics Conference
(ISEE2012) which focused on challenges and
contributions toward a Green Economy. The

INDECOL
PhD
candidate
STEFAN
PAULIUK
and
Professor
DANIEL
MÜLLER
collaborated with Rachel Milford and Julian
Allwood from Cambridge University on the
development of a model and scenarios for
the global steel cycle and its associated
emission pathways.
STEFAN PAULIUK submitted his PhD the-
sis, “The Role of Stock Dynamics in Climate
Change Mitigation”, in late 2012 and it was
successfully defended on April 9th 2013. He
then joined the IndEcol team as a postdoc-
toral fellow in December 2012.
GANG LIU submitted his PhD theses in
late 2012, defended on March 21st 2013,
entitled “Rolling Out the Anthropogenic
Aluminum Cycle: With Foci on Temporal,
Geographical, and Emission Perspectives”
at the Industrial Ecology Programme and
at Department of Hydraulic and Environ-
mental Engineering. The work was super-
vised by Prof.essors DANIEL B. MÜLLER and
HELGE BRATTEBØ. Gang has continued
his work as a postdoctoral fellow at IndE-
col since December 2012, as a part of the
“Decarbonise: climate protection through
decarbonisation of German industries”-
project.
ROJA MODARESI and DANIEL MÜLLER
have successfully completed the project
“Mines on Wheels”, funded by the Euro-
pean Aluminium Association (EAA) and
the International Aluminium Institute (IAI).
This project involved the development of a
model, a database, and scenarios to assess
the potential for aluminium recovery from
end-of-life vehicle management in Europe.
GANG LIU received the 2012 Chinese Gov-
ernment Award for Excellent Students
Abroad.
THE INTERNATIONAL ALUMINIUM INSTI-
TUTE (IAI) has decided to replace the exist-
ing global aluminium recycling model with
a new model and scenario tool based on a
model developed mainly by GANG LIU at
the Industrial Ecology Programme. While
the old model had a focus on recycling,
the purpose of the new model is to sup-
port strategy development of the member
companies, which includes and integrates
recycling, production forecasts, energy use,
and emissions etc.
Former PhD student RAQUEL JORGE
started working at ENOVA, the agency re-
sponsible for supporting energy efficiency
and the introduction of renewable energy.
Raquel works with ENOVA’s strategy.
PostDoc JAN WEINZETTEL completed his
work on the One Planet Economy Europe
project and has returned to the Charles
University Environment Centre in Prague,
where he works as researcher. Jan also got
married to Pavla. Congratulations!
Professor ANNIK MAGERHOLM FET, De-
partment of Industrial Economics and
Technology Management, NTNU, received
the Environmental Award 2012 from
Ålesund Municipality for her never ending
encouragement for the regional industry
and local authorities to implement indus-
trial ecology principles into their business
strategies.
EVERT
BOUMAN,
HELEN
ANN
HAMILTON
and
OLA
STEDJE
HANSERUD all joined the Industrial
Ecology
Programme
in
2012
as
PhD candidates.
IndEcol welcomed KONSTANTIN STADLER
as a new postdoctoral fellow in August
2012. Konstantin has a PhD in neuroscience
from Charite (Berlin, Germany) and utilizes
his programming skills in the CREEA project.
IndEcol welcomed research assistants
MOANA SIMAS, ANTHONY PAK, and REYN
O’BORN. Moana has skills in input-output
analysis and energy from the University of
Sao Paolo. and works on the employment
and social impacts of the green economy.
Anthony and Reyn have MSc degrees from
IndEcol and work with communication and
research support for various projects. An-
thony also leads TEDx Trondheim.
