Faglig innhold

Geo-spatial information is crucially shaping our understanding of the world we live in. GIS techniques are being rapidly adopted by local and national policy makers and the business sector. Likewise, not only the humanities and the social sciences need to explicitly consider the spatial dimension of economic and social processes, but thinking spatially facilitates the adoption of innovative research techniques.
Scheduled over four three-hour lab sessions, this hands-on course provides a thorough overview of how to map spatial information and apply Geographic Information Systems in empirical studies using ArcGIS. This course will interest graduate students in History, Economics, Sociology and Political Science. No previous background in GIS is required.
Please note that if students plan to include this course in their coursework component, it must be preapproved by the relevant head of the study/PhD programme in coorporation with their supervisor.

Læringsutbytte

A candidate who satisfactorily passes the course will be able to:
- Design quality maps to visualise spatial information
- Digitalise historical maps and aerial or satellite images
- Compute variables using geo-spatial information
- Automate processes in ArcGIS using Model Builder and Python

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

The course is taught intensively in 4 three-hour sessions over two days (12 hours in total).
An eminently hands-on course, students will learn the different skills throughout examples and assignments implemented in ArcGIS, a widely-used software package that is available for NTNU students and faculty. Further information will be provided prior to the beginning of the course.
