NTNU English Language Requirements - Guide

The NTNU Office of International Relations receives frequent inquiries about documenting English language proficiency.

Requirements, exemptions and accepted documentation are clearly outlined on our webpages

As part of our policy, e-mail inquiries about this are therefore, in general, not prioritized for an answer. Instead, we invite you to use this guide to determine whether or not you need to document English proficiency.

By answering the questions below, you will be told whether or not you need to present documentation of English proficiency with your appliaction to NTNU.

Please note: This refers to a university degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in which the language of teaching/instruction is exclusively English.

It is NOT sufficient that the degree was taught in English. English language must have been the academic focus of the degree.

You have to document English proficiency

You do NOT meet any of the requirements for exemption, and will have to upload documentation of English proficiency when applying at NTNU.

The following are accepted proofs of English proficiency. You can find links directly to these on our webpage

• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition:
- Minimum score of 90 points on the internet based test
- Minimum score of 600 points on the paper based test
- Please note that the test results must be sent directly from ETS to NTNU, in addition to you uploading them in Søknadsweb. NTNU's department code for English Proficiency tests is 9652.

• IELTS (International English Language Testing Service)
- Academic test with a minimum overall band score of 6.5

• University of Cambridge tests, at least one of the following:
- First Certificate in English
- Certificate in Advanced English
- Certificate of Proficiency in English

• Pearsons Academic English test (PTE) or PTE Academic Online:
- The academic version with a minimum score of 62

English language tests (IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson) can not be older than two years at time of the application deadline.

You hold a university degree in English as an academic field (e.g. English linguistics, English literature, English language etc.)

You therefore do NOT need to upload an English test to prove your proficiency, but you will have to document the aforementioned English degree.

You have attended High School or equivalent in a Nordic Country and received a passing grade in English.

You therefore do NOT need to upload an English test to prove your proficiency, but you will have to upload your High School diploma from a Nordic country showing a passing grade in English.

You have an International Baccelaureate with a score of 4 or higher.

You have completed a degree, and thus at least ONE YEAR, at a university physically located in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Great Britain or the USA.

You therefore do NOT need to upload an English test to prove your proficiency, but you will have to prove your attendance at the aforementioned university.

You have completed a university degree taught in English from a certified country.

You therefore do NOT need to upload an English test to prove your proficiency, but you will have to upload your diploma.

You have a High School diploma from an exempted country in the EU/EEA, where the quality of English education is certified.

You therefore do NOT need to upload an English test to prove your proficiency, but you will have to upload your High School diploma.

You need to document English proficiency

You hold a High School diploma from the EU/EEA, but not from an exempted country.

You will need to upload a certificate documenting that you meet the B2 English language level, using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages scale. Please note that an IELTS of 6.0 is not sufficient.

You hold an A-level exam in English from a certified country.
