This year’s spring conference approached imaging from an academic, industrial – and artistic angle. Around 70 participants came to Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand in Vestfold to share the latest on ultrasound developments in CIUS and ongoing research and development from our partners located in Horten.

The first day was dedicated to the academic efforts in CIUS with talks on adaptive beamforming in cardiac ultrasound and sonar, and speed-updates from PhD candidates on topics such as dual frequency capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs), acoustics in solids, machine learning, and beamforming.

Ultrasound imaging was not the only modality on the programme however, and before the conference dinner, all participants were invited to a cultural walk in the footsteps of the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch.

Day two was dedicated to industry partners and started with company visits to GE Vingmed Ultrasound and Medistim. At GE Vingmed the visit focused on Vscan development, probe technology and image quality research and development. Very inspiring to hear about how a world leading company is developing further. Medistim have their probe production in Horten, and fantastic to see the assembly line of probes used for intra-operative ultrasound flow monitoring in open heart coronary bypass surgery. The probes can be sterilized and re-used up to 50 times. Impressive!

This was followed by presentations on the development of the new VScan Air handheld ultrasound system by GE Vingmed, an incredible presentation from Kongsberg Maritime about synthetic aperture sonar imaging using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and non-destructive inspection using ultrasound (with demo) by the company Dolphitech.

We thank all participants and presenters for an inspiring conference, and hope to see you all – and more – in Trondheim in November.
