Olav Egeland
Om
Olav Egeland er professor i produksjonsautomatisering ved Institutt for maskinteknikk og produksjon ved NTNU. Han underviser og forsker innen robotteknikk med fokus på robotisert produksjon og maskinlæring for roboter og kontrollsystemer.
Olav Egeland var ansatt ved Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk 1984-2004 hvor han jobbet med robotteknikk og kontrollsystemer for maritime anvendelser. Dette arbeidet var basert på matematisk modellering og utvikling av spesialiserte kontrollsystemer ved bruk av energibaserte metoder som passivitet og geometriske metoder for ikke-holonome systemer og for styring av rotasjon ved bruk av kvaternioner. Viktige anvendelser var robotstyring, vibrasjonsdemping for luftputekatmaraner, kontrollsystemer for kompressorer og forbrenningsmotoerer, vibrasjonsdemping av mekaniske kontruksjoner og styring av rotasjon i 3 dimensjoner.
I Marine Cybernetics AS i perioden 2004-2011 var fokus på validering av kontrollsystemer for skip og borerigger ved bruk av matematisk modellering og simulering. Dette selskapet ble solgt til Det Norske Veritas i 2014.
Fra 2012 har Olav Egeland vært professor ved Institutt for maskinteknikk og produksjon ved NTNU. Han har arbeidet med robotisert produksjon for norsk industri. Dette inkluderer robotisert skanning og sliping av skipspropeller og robotsveising for store offshore-konstrusjoner. I dette arbeidet er industrielle robotsyster brukt i kombinasjon med ny sensorteknologi, kamerasystemer og software. I tillegg har han jobbet med automatisk styring av offshore kransystemer. Dette arbeidet har vært basert på geometriske metoder for kontrollsystemer og robotsyn. Fra 2020 har det vært fokus på maskinlæring for bruk i kontrollsystemer hvor nevrale nett, RKHS-metoder og Lie-grupper har stått sentralt.
Han er siv.ing. (1984) og dr.ing. (1987) i teknisk kybernetikk ved NTNU. Han var forsker ved German Aerospace Center i Oberpfaffenhofen 1988 - 1989, professor i robotteknikk ved Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk 1989 - 2004, med-gründer, CTO og CEO i Marine Cybernetics AS 2004 - 2011, og studieleder i elektro- og datateknikk ved HiST 2011-2012. Han var instituttstyrer ved Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk og prodekanus for forskning ved Fakultet for elektroteknikk og telekommunikasjon 1996-1998. Han var Associate Editor i IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control 1996-1999 og European Journal of Control 1998-2000. Han mottok Automatica Prize Paper Award i 1996, og 2000 IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award. Han har vært hovedveileder for 85 MSc og 30 PhD. Han var prosjektleder for Strategisk universitetsprogram i marin kybernetikk 1997-2004, han var disiplinleder for kyberneitkk i SFF Centre of Ships and Ocean Structures 2002-2004 og arbeidspakkeleder i SFI Offshore Mechatronics 2013-2018.
