Maria er en marinbiokjemiker interessert i marine biogeokjemiske prosesser og hvordan de er påvirket av klimaendringer. Hun fokuserer på karakterisering av organisk karbon i havet og interaksjonen mellom spormetaller og karbonsyklusen.
PhD-prosjektet hennes er en del av Arven etter Nansen prosjektet for bærekraftig utvikling av Arktis og marine ressurser.
