Etter en mastergrad som byggingeniør ved Universita di Catania (Italia), flyttet Luca Finocchiaro til Skottland, hvor han tok master i arkitektur ved Glasgow School of Art. Han har jobbet i Barcelona som besøkende forsker ved ETSAB i UPC for å utvikle sin doktoravhandling i miljøstyring og bioklimatisk design, og senere også for å praktisere arkitektur. Luca er i dag førsteamanuensis i bioklimatisk design ved NTNU og har vart programleder for masterprogrammet i Sustainable Architecture mellom 2013 og 2021. Hans hovedinteresse og forskningsfokus er analyse og forståelse av klimaet og dets implementering i den arkitektoniske utformingen av bygninger som er i stand til å passivt ta sin miljøinnsats for å oppnå komfort. Klima og morfologiske analyser har vært brukt som bakgrunn for  å definere designretningslinjer for både utforming av nye bygninger og energiettermontering i eksisterende. I 2009 Luca var initiativtaker til NTNUs forslag til Solar Decathlon 2012 og senere arkitekt av LivingLAB og Test Cell-prosjekter på Zero Emission Buildings' forskningssenter på NTNU.
