Ida Westermann er instituttleder og professor ved Institutt for Materialteknologi. Forskningsmessig hører hun inn under forskningsgruppen Fysikalsk Metallurgi. Hun har en bred erfaring innen undervisning av materialteknologiske fag på alle nivå.
Forskningsområder
Hovedforskningsområde til Ida Westermann er å forstå samspillet mellom innvirkningen av deformasjon og temperatur under prosessering, mikrostruktur og mekaniske egenskaper til metalliske materialer, hovedsakelig stål og aluminium. Skalaen spenner fra nanoskala (utfellinger og partikler) gjennom mikroskala (kornstruktur) til makroskala (sluttprodukter / strukturer).
Noe av det siste arbeidet inkluderer in-situ-testing i skanning elektronmikroskop (SEM) kombinert med digital bildekorrelasjon (DIC). Denne teknikken krever at markører i / på materialet kan spores under deformasjon. Det har blitt brukt både mikrostrukturen som spesifikk markør, men også en tekknikk med omstrukturering av et gullsjikt, der en høy tetthet av små gulldråper dannes. Den sistnevnte teknikken gir en veldig høy oppløsning av tøyningsfeltet under deformasjon.
Et annet tema som Ida Westermann har jobbet med de siste årene er multi-materialer. Det kan være f.eks. aluminium og stål som har blitt kaldsammenføyd gjennom valsing, hvor etterfølgende varmebehandling og mekaniske egenskaper undersøkes. Varmebehandlingene fører til dannelse av intermetalliske faser, som har stor innvirkning på egenskapene til bindingen. Legeringselementer i bulkmaterialene påvirker kimdanningen og veksten av de intermetalliske faser på forskjellige måter.
En annen måte å fremstille multi-materialer på er ved additiv manufacturing, populært kalt 3D-printing, av ulike materialer. Her kan man kombinere ulike egenskaper, som varmeledningsevne fra eksempelvis Cu og styrke fra metaller som stål eller nikkel.
